What Exactly Is Trenchless Sewer Repair?

Trenchless sewer repair is a method for repairing or replacing underground sewer lines with little to no excavation. Instead of digging a trench the length of the pipe, we access the line through one or two small entry points and fix it from the inside, or pull a new pipe through the old one.

Primary Trenchless Methods:

Pipe Bursting

A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into place behind it. This method is used when the pipe is too damaged or collapsed to be lined. It replaces the pipe entirely rather than rehabilitating it.

Pipe Lining (Cured-In-Place Pipe)

A flexible liner coated in epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe and inflated. Once it cures, it forms a smooth, seamless new pipe inside the old one. The original pipe essentially becomes a mold for the new one. This method is ideal for pipes with cracks, corrosion, or root intrusion where the pipe structure is still largely intact.

Both methods are permanent repairs that restore full flow capacity and seal the line against future root intrusion.

Common Causes of Sewer Line Damage

Tree root intrusion. Roots seek out moisture and will work their way into any crack or joint in a sewer line. Over time, they expand and cause blockages or structural damage. This is the most common cause of sewer line failure in residential properties throughout SoCal.

  • Aging pipe materials: Homes built before the 1970s often have clay or Orangeburg sewer pipes. These materials deteriorate significantly over time. Once they begin to crack or collapse, repair is the only option.
  • Soil movement: Southern California’s varied soil types and seismic activity can cause underground pipes to shift, separate at joints, or crack under pressure.
  • Grease and buildup: Over years of use, grease, scale, and debris accumulate inside sewer lines, narrowing the passageway and eventually causing backups.

Sewer problems rarely fix themselves. If you notice any of the following, it’s worth having your line inspected. We use camera inspection to view the inside of the line before recommending any repair. You’ll see exactly what’s wrong and where before any work is approved.

  • Slow drains throughout the house
  • Gurgling sounds from toilets or drains
  • Sewage odor inside or around your home
  • Sewage backing up into tubs, showers, or floor drains
  • Unusually green or lush patches of grass over the sewer line
  • Persistent drain clogs that keep returning
  • Foundation cracks or sinkholes in the yard

Pipe lining and pipe bursting are permanent repairs. CIPP liners are rated to last 50+ years. Pipe bursting installs new HDPE pipe, which has a similar lifespan. Both outlast the original pipe material.

A camera inspection tells you definitively. If the issue is buildup or a soft blockage, cleaning may be all that’s needed. If the camera shows cracks, root intrusion, or structural damage, repair is necessary.

Pipe lining requires the pipe to have enough structure to insert the liner. A fully collapsed section may require pipe bursting or targeted excavation at the collapse point. We assess this during the camera inspection.

In most cases, no. Trenchless methods require only small access pits, only in the damaged section. Driveways, patios, and landscaping are usually left undisturbed.

In most jurisdictions, yes. We handle permit coordination as part of the job.
